If you live in a flood risk area it is a good idea to create your own personal flood plan.
Your plan might include things you should do:
1/ Before a flood;
- sign up for flood warnings
- ensure your insurance is up to date and adequate
- think about measures you could take to stop, or slow, water coming into your home
- Put important documents and possessions in an easily accessible waterproof container.
- create a list of contact details you might need in the event of a flood
- prepare a flood kit of items that would be useful
2/ When a flood is expected:
- turn off utilities
- raise any items you can above floor level e.g. precious possessions, rugs, smaller items of furnture
- use any measures you have available to stop water entering e.g. barriers, air brick covers, sandbags etc
- move pets to safety
- move vehicles to safety
- get you flood kit and charge your mobile phone
3/ When a flood happens:
- follow information and warnings provided by authorities
- contact agencies/emergency services if you are in any risk or need immediate assistance
- let family and friends know you are safe/check on friends neighbours
- do not put yourself or others in danger e.g. walking or driving through flood water
4/ After a flood:
- do not return to your home until it is safe to do so
- be aware that flood water may contain sewage or other dangers
- where protective clothing when cleaning up from any flood waters
- contact your insurance company if you need to make a claim
- contact your landlord if you live in a rented property
- if necessary get utilities checked before turning them back on
